Moose Lake, Minnesota
The cabin is nestled between Sand Lake & the Moose Lake Golf Course. It has been in the Hambly Family since its construction in 1929 & still boasts its original log walls & fireplace. Legend has it, that each of the field stones that make up the fireplace were numbered & moved from Duluth to Moose Lake.
Richard and Josephine Hambly purchased the raw land in 1929 as rumors of a golf course began to sweep the area. Richard and his oldest son constructed a small log cabin in 1929; and as luck would have it a 9-hole golf course opened that same year. Richard and his oldest son constructed a small log cabin in 1929; and as luck would have it a 9-hole golf course opened that same year. The golf course did not have a putting green; instead you would place a piece of carpet under the ball to hit. And with this, the start of the Hambly Family in Pine County begins. The picture above is Richard & Josephine with their children.
Dick (youngest son of Richard & Josephine Hambly) and June moved from Duluth to Moose Lake in 1952 to raise their 3 children, Richard, David and Susan. They hosted many family gatherings at the Hambly Cabin that included his 3 siblings; as well as June's sister. Dick retired from the Standard Oil Company in 1980 and June retired shortly thereafter from the United States Post Office; and they purchased the cabin for $1 from Walter and Vivian Overmann (Dick's sister). They added on the large bedroom, living room and added the bathroom. No more outhouse!!! They spent 38 wonderful years living in the cabin full time and making memories.
Susan (daughter of Dick & June Hambly) grew up in the town of Moose Lake and would spend weekends with her extended family at the cabin as a child. As she got older, Susan and her brother, David, managed to throw a quite few MLHS parties. John and Susan retired in 2019 and spend quite a bit of time catching up with friends and family whil
Susan (daughter of Dick & June Hambly) grew up in the town of Moose Lake and would spend weekends with her extended family at the cabin as a child. As she got older, Susan and her brother, David, managed to throw a quite few MLHS parties. John and Susan retired in 2019 and spend quite a bit of time catching up with friends and family while hosting chili dinner parties at the cabin. In true carpenter fashion, John has restored the cabin to its original state.
Casey (daughter of John & Susan Powell) lives in Austin, Texas and enjoys her visits to the cabin with her family. Her favorite vacations as a child were the times she spent learning how to swim in Sand Lake, sliding down the slide on Moose Head Lake, buying popcorn from Mr. Macaulay's school bus and driving the old yellow pontoon around.

Her favorite vacations as a child were the times she spent learning how to swim in Sand Lake, sliding down the slide on Moose Head Lake, buying popcorn from Mr. Macaulay's school bus and driving the old yellow pontoon around. She actually prefers to visit the cabin in the heart of those terrible Minnesota winters as she enjoys skiing, ice fishing and playing board games (and WINNING) around the fireplace.
One of the many family reunions put together at the cabin; here everyone is gathered where the "entry way" now is.
The Hambly family welcome the next generation to the cabin.

June Hamply relaxing after (what I can imagine) was a tough day on the course. June won countless tournaments and awards during her career; but her favorite golf partner was always Dick. To this day, her 1971 Championship Flight can be found on the fireplace mantel. This picture is before the bedroom addition, as the door to the hallway is where the built in shelves are. (May 1977)

A place to rent a boat for the week; or launch your own boat and drive it over to the Hambly Cabin.

Rent clubs or bring your own! If golf is not your sport; you can relax on the patio and enjoy the weekend bands. Great place for drinks; and just a few steps from the Hambly Cabin.
Yall-- OMG. Every kind of bratwurst and cheese curd you can think of. A fan fovorite brat of ours is wild rice; or breakfast blend (egg, cheese & hashbrown); or even chicken, bacon and swiss stuffed. Then, stop off at Rob's Tavern for a frosty beer.
Grab dinner, drinks and some rental shoes and enjoy the evening.
My love affair with Duluth has been ongoing since I was a child. The antique shopping, the bars, the eats, the history, the views--- its a MUST VISIT. If you've never seen a great lake...
